The Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)

25 June 2015

The mandatory implementation of performance standards in certain fields of activity has strongly reinforced customer requirements that oblige manufacturers to work with a welding quality system (e.g. EN ISO 3834) in which the qualification of operating procedures becomes a crucial element.

As a result, each type of welding gives rise to a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) which itself refers to a prior Welding Procedure Qualification Record (WPQR). The main objective of the WPS is therefore to ensure a high level of quality.

What are the benefits of SIRFULL™ Welding?

The software SIRFULL™ Welding is positioned here as the ideal solution for the implementation of the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS). It allows to :

  • Easily process and manage the existing data and information required of a WPS thanks to its clarity and the volume of detailed information it can process,
  • Create a logical process to create a relevant welding procedure description in a very short period of time,
  • It also has an extensive database of base materials, fillers, gases, electrodes and sketches,
  • Significantly simplify work and save valuable time compared to manual creation.
  • Improve efficiency in the management of welding procedures

To keep it simple, SIRFULL™ Welding enables you to easily, quickly, and reliably create and track WPS.

What is a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)?

WPS contains all the information a welder needs to manage a welding task. They are the basis for all quality welds. The technical content of the WPS is determined down to the last detail with standards such as ISO 15609-1 and ASME IX. Nevertheless, procedures vary from company to company and project to project.

What information is contained in a WPS?

In a WPS, one finds the information necessary for the preparation before welding, the settings of the station to be welded, and information on the materials used (filler metal and welded materials).

When should a WPS be drafted?

The WPS is written after having been executed. It is also possible to take an already obtained qualification of an old welding process and adapt it.

Who is involved in drafting a WPS?

The welding manager, the qualified welder, the controller and the inspector are the people who will be affected by ASD.

Is WPS mandatory?

WPS is mandatory if a company wishes to validate a welding procedure qualification (WPQR) and also to qualify a welder. The welder will have to know how to interpret a WPS and also to respect the instructions to carry out the welds by the WPS.

To remember

With the new generation of high-performance technical software such as SIRFULL™ Welding, the creation of WPS is done with considerable time savings.
